Pentland Pet Services Monthly Newsletter – March

The month got off to a great start with the return of Rufus, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, one of our regular lodgers.
True to character Rufus made himself quite at home and thoroughly enjoyed his few days holiday with us.

He has a new streamlined figure having been on a diet and was looking very dapper. We had some great walks together in the fields, meeting old pals of the canine variety who were eager to join Rufus for a run about.

March also saw the continuation of training for Roxy the Black Lab and Blue the German Shepherd. Different dogs in their approach to training but both eager to learn, as are their handlers, Ann and Kathleen.

Next to arrive for lodging were Yeva the Black Russian Terrier and Elsa the Leonberger.

Yeva and Elsa always come to stay during Crufts week as Tim and Janice like to spend time at the show and never fail to return with interesting purchases.
This time it was a ‘Muddy Paw’ cleaner that resembles a cask with an opening surrounded by soft brushes. The idea is for the dog’s paw to be inserted and drawn out, thereby removing any mud.

Ross and I watched the coverage of Crufts on television and were delighted when we predicted, and saw, the Flat Coated Retriever win. What a beautiful dog and what and lovely, unassuming owner.  Nice that he was also a Scotsman!

With several new dogs looking for lodging, March was also busy with pre-lodging visitors.
We met Reilly, a gorgeous Bichon Frise, who until about a year ago had been living in America where he had been rescued from a puppy farm.
It never fails to amaze me at how forgiving these rescue dogs are and hearing Reilly’s story only endorsed that feeling. He is a balanced happy chappy in a family/ pack who adore him.

Next to check us out was Dillon, a cross German Shepherd, and his owner Alistair.
Dillon is another happy boy with only one “sin” as Alistair put it – he hates the postman.
Alistair is going to try out some exercises I suggested to help Dillon become sin free - I will keep you ‘posted’ on the result…

We also met Jed, the Border Terrier, an old boy of 16 years.

But apart from suffering from deafness, Jed is remarkably spritely for his advanced years.
Jed will be lodging with us in April so there will be a photo of him in the April Newsletter for you to see for yourself.

I managed to get an all-too-infrequent visit to my friend Mary and her six fabulous Deerhounds: Fernietickles, Misty, Roamin, Filliberry, Ailsa and CubbieRoo.
It was a glorious day weather-wise so we were able to walk the dogs around the paddock two at a time and soak up some sunshine.

CubbieRoo has not had a good few months as he had a pretty bad viral infection but fingers crossed he is on the mend and will not require another visit to the vet. You may also recall that last year Ailsa broke her leg, which necessitated the involvement of Glasgow Veterinary Hospital. Mary has not had an easy time with her two youngsters!

As reported in the previous Newsletters the 2011 lodging calendar has been filling up quickly – to such an extent that we only have odd dates left this year and bookings are already being received and confirmed for 2012.

So do please let me know as soon as you have dates.

Happy Birthday to Poppy the Cocker Spaniel who, I am told, enjoyed her birthday cake and even shared it with some of her doggy pals.

Looking forward to meeting up with you on our walks, so until next Newsletter keep those tails wagging.
