Pentland Pet Services Monthly Newsletter - August

Blue the Whippet is always a very welcome lodger, so I was delighted when her owner phoned to see if Blue could come for a stay at short notice and found that I had a gap to accommodate her.

Once off leash Blue flies at an amazing speed, stopping other dog walkers in their tracks just to watch the spectacle. On a few occasions other dogs tried to have a run with Blue but few could keep up. Tasha, the Boxer, made a valiant effort I have to say, and one of my favourite August memories will be of Blue and Tasha sitting together on a hillock, having had a great run together, tongues hanging out with that contented doggy smile on their faces.

One of the other dogs Blue met up with was Becky the Lurcher. Becky is the old lady of the fields now, and has been battling with ill health. However she remains the sweetest of dogs, radiating an energy of calmness and wisdom. Blue reacted to this energy by being totally respectful around Becky, giving her right of way and following in her paw steps at a distance.

Bailey, the young Retriever, is progressing very well with his training, as are his owners Nairn and Karen. During August Bailey had a very successful trip away with his people, enjoying his stay in a caravan and joining them on some wonderful walks. Later in the month Bailey had his first lodging experience with PPS, settling in without any bother.

Bailey does not need a ball or anything else to chase, as once off leash he just runs with the sheer joy of living. Considering he is only 5 months old, Bailey is already displaying a calmness and contentedness usually found in older dogs.

However, he does forget himself on occasions and reverts to cheeky puppy as was apparent when Ross passed me a glass of water that Bailey decided was just what he needed, and proceeded to drink from the glass himself...

With his first lodging experience successfully behind him, Bailey packed his belongings, welcomed his people/pack on their return and headed home, but will be back at the beginning of September for another few days.

Ross and I had a short break ourselves in August, crossing over to Arran where we stayed at the beautiful Kildonan Hotel with stunning views directly across to Pladda and Ailsa Craig.
The Kildonan welcomes dogs and, situated as it is on Seal Shore, is ideal for coastal walks - plus there are many other interesting trails around to be explored.

After a very relaxed few days Ross headed back to Prestwick while I took the little ferry over to Holy Isle for a weeklong course/ retreat that was a life changing experience. As no dogs are permitted on Holy Isle I had to content myself in the company of the wild sheep, goats and ponies, and other people of course. Holy Isle is the most idyllic place and I have returned with many happy memories and wonderful new friends.

So with August becoming a distant memory I am preparing for the September visitors and trainees. I shall also be meeting up with Becky the Lurcher and Clyde the Boxer to ‘interview’ them for next month’s Newsletter, and hear all about their eventful lives.

Enjoy your dog walks and keep those tails wagging.
