Pentland Pet Services Monthly Newsletter - January

I hope everyone survived the dreadful January weather without too much damage.
Not good dog walking weather!

We are busy renewing fencing that was blown down in the storms so the rear garden is once again secure in plenty of time for the start of the lodging season.
We had a few lodgers over the winter months, mainly day care and weekend stays, and we may consider extending the lodging season on a permanent basis. So, as I have said before, it is always worth a phone call.

The 2012 calendar is pretty full and I am looking forward to seeing all the regulars again this year.  But there will be a few newbies during the year too, all of whom have made their pre-lodging visit and given the paws up.
Amber and Skye, two lovely young labs, seemed happy when they visited and were pleased to be the first to try out the new dog bed (which had only been delivered the previous day).

Milly the Labradoodle popped in a few times over the winter for day care and, as always, was a delightful guest.
Another weekend guest was Jed, the Border Terrier. Jed is the elder statesman of our lodgers - on his next birthday in February he will be 17 years old.

Over the past month I have been working with two new trainees – Maddi, a very young Brown Lab and Milly, the Black Lab who has past the puppy stage and now into adolescence. Both dogs are full of energy, very intelligent and keen to learn, although on occasions they have decided that to roll over and have fun is much better than “sitting,” “staying” and the like.

Recently we had a very welcome visit from Rufus, the Ruby Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

Rufus always has a ‘tail’ to tell and this time it was about the strange disappearance of the Christmas Cake from the table over the holiday period.
There was some crumby evidence suggesting that Rufus had something to do with the mystery, however his innocent little face saying “who, me?” got him off the hook.

Has anyone else noticed the new dog grooming parlour on Ayr Road just before the traffic lights at Heathfield? I spotted it as I was driving past so would be interested in hearing any reports from anyone using it.
And another new veterinary service has opened alongside Pets at Home. In fact you can access it from the shop, so again any report would be welcomed.

Tasha the Boxer has had a tough time over the past couple of months as she had a fracture in one of her paws. This curtailed her social life somewhat as she had to be on leash and could not enjoy her usual race & chase games with her pals.
However she is now back in action and much happier since the fracture healed.

One of the less endearing habits some of our dogs have is poo eating (apologies to anyone with a sensitive tummy or eating as you read this), so I was interested to hear about the 'pineapple remedy' that I am assured has proved successful in many cases.
Apparently a couple of teaspoonful’s of pineapple juice dribbled over dried biscuit food at mealtime can do the trick. I heard the scientific explanation but was more interested in hearing that it caused no harm. And had a high success rate.

Another story I heard recently confirmed how inventive some people are in fixing an annoying issue. In this case it was an opportunist Boxer who never missed the chance to snatch food right out of anyone’s hand when they least expected it.
However the problem was given a quick fix when the owner sat holding a bar of soap as though it were a sandwich…
Need I say more?

Towards the end of last year Ross and I considered a Pentland Pet Services Calendar as we have so many wonderful photos of your dogs.
Unfortunately, with family events taking a turn for the worse, our time and attention had to be focused on other things and the calendar idea never came to anything.
However we are now revisiting the calendar for 2013 and have made initial enquiries so would be interested to hear from anyone who might be interested in purchasing this at the end of the year.
If it does turn out to be a feasible project Ross and I will have a mammoth task in choosing the photographs that will appear, but it would be worth all the effort.

Here’s hoping that we have some nicer weather to look forward to in the coming months!

Anne and Ross
